INTERNATIONAL SEARCH & RESCUE COACHING & MENTORING

Mentoring is a protected relationship which supports learning and experimentation which helps individuals develop their potential. This mentoring may take several forms but should be conducted over several months allowing the individuals to grow in knowledge acquisition, competence and capability at their own pace. This should therefore be designed to be bespoke to the individual requirements. Mentors share their experiences, but coaches prompt leaders to reflect on their experience and draw their own conclusions. For example, a mentor will point out what he or she thinks a mentee could have done better, while a coach will ask the individual what he or she could improve on and how to make that happen.

Mentors provide guidance and support, adapting their commitment to the team's readiness over a two-year planning timeline. An approved mentor with INSARAG expertise offers advice on all USAR components (Management, Search, Rescue, Medical and Logistics). The mentor assesses the team's progress, crucially facilitating the IEC exercise.
